Juan El Grande

🎤 Artist in the
Spotlight: Juan El Grande
Sometimes Freedom Begins with the Courage to Leave
Some artists spend their entire lives chasing a career in music. Others discover that music becomes more meaningful when life has already given them a story worth telling.
For Juan El Grande, music has never been about fitting into a particular scene, following trends or trying to become something he is not. His songs are increasingly becoming chapters of a much bigger story — one shaped by time, change, love, disappointment, determination and, perhaps most importantly, freedom.
That story takes centre stage with his latest single, “Gateway to Freedom.”
At first listen, the song carries the unmistakable feeling of the open road. There is movement, space and that irresistible sense of leaving something behind while heading towards something unknown. But beneath that surface lies a much more personal message.
“Sometimes freedom begins by simply having the courage to leave.”
For Juan El Grande, those words are more than a lyric or promotional phrase. They reflect a decision he actually made.
In 2019, after spending most of his life in Belgium, he packed up and moved to Spain. It was not simply a change of address. It meant leaving behind the familiar and beginning another chapter of his life in a different country.
That experience gave him something valuable as a songwriter: the knowledge that starting again is not something reserved for the young.
Sometimes the biggest adventures begin much later.
Songs Written from Life
That philosophy can increasingly be heard throughout Juan El Grande's music.
Rather than concentrating on one narrowly defined genre, his catalogue moves naturally between rock, country, blues and singer-songwriter influences. What connects the songs is not necessarily their musical style, but the stories behind them.
Tracks such as “TIME, A Precious Thing,” “Wayfaring Stranger,” “Winterblues,” “Run Like Hell,” “Wizard Kid” and now “Gateway to Freedom” show an artist who is comfortable allowing each song to find its own identity.
His album “WIDE OPEN”, released in December 2025, was another important step in that development.
There is also something refreshingly unconventional about his journey. At an age when society often expects people to slow down, Juan appears determined to do precisely the opposite.
New songs are being written. New releases are being prepared. Videos are being produced. A growing catalogue is taking shape.
And the next chapters are already waiting.
“Braveheart” is planned for release later in 2026, followed by a new song for the New Year period, while a collection bringing together his growing catalogue of country songs is also taking shape.
There is no farewell tour being planned here.
The journey is still moving forward.
More Than His Own Music
There is another side to the Juan El Grande story that makes his path particularly unusual.
Over the years, his involvement with independent music gradually expanded far beyond releasing his own songs.
He became a playlist curator, worked with independent artists from around the world and eventually created El Grande Music World (EGMW) — an independent music platform designed around a simple principle:
artists should come first.
What began as a collection of ideas has grown into an ecosystem offering independent artists services and tools including music distribution, playlist promotion, music press, Artist OS, marketing support, SmartLinks and ticketing.
Alongside EGMW sits EGM Playlists, where dozens of independently curated playlists connect emerging artists with new listeners, and Daily Music Press, the publication you are reading right now.
That does create an unusual situation for this particular Artist in the Spotlight.
The man being featured in the article is also the man behind the publication.
But perhaps that is exactly why his story belongs here.
Daily Music Press was created to give independent artists a place where their stories could be told. Juan El Grande happens to be one of those independent artists too.
Building Instead of Waiting
There is a recurring theme running through almost everything Juan does.
If something does not exist, build it.
If a door remains closed, look for another entrance.
If the traditional music industry does not provide independent artists with the tools they need, create alternatives.
And if life no longer feels like the life you want to live, change direction.
That same mentality connects his music with his work behind EGMW.
It is also what makes “Gateway to Freedom” such an appropriate song for this moment in his career.
The gateway in the title does not have to be a physical place. It can be a decision.
Leaving a job.
Leaving a country.
Starting a business.
Writing your first song.
Starting again at sixty, seventy or any other age.
Freedom does not necessarily arrive by itself. Sometimes you have to move towards it.
The Road Ahead
Juan El Grande is unlikely to fit neatly into the conventional image of an emerging artist.
And perhaps that is precisely the point.
There is no rule saying creativity has an expiry date. There is no age at which someone has to stop dreaming, building or taking risks. And there is certainly no rule saying that the most interesting chapter of your life has to be the first one.
For Juan, music has become part of something larger than releasing songs.
It is a way of documenting the journey.
From Belgium to Spain. From songwriter to recording artist. From playlist curator to the creation of an independent music platform. From helping promote his own music to helping other artists find an audience for theirs.
And somewhere along that road came “Gateway to Freedom” — a song that manages to capture much of that philosophy in a single thought:
Sometimes freedom begins by simply having the courage to leave.
For Juan El Grande, that is not just a line from a song.
It is something he has already lived.
And judging by everything currently in motion, the road ahead is still wide open.
