JACK BIILMANN — DARK DAYS
Some songs tell a story. Others sound as if the artist had no choice but to tell it.
Jack Biilmann's Dark Days belongs firmly in the second category.
Discovered by EGM Playlists through the Best Indie Artist Club, Dark Days immediately stood out as a track with something more to offer than a memorable melody or strong production. There is weight behind this song — and once you know the story that inspired it, that weight becomes impossible to ignore.
The Canberra-based Australian singer-songwriter has spent years developing a distinctive blend of blues, rock, country, soul and folk. With millions of streams, chart success, extensive touring and a reputation as an exceptional guitarist and live performer, Biilmann is certainly no newcomer to the independent music scene.
But Dark Days feels deeply personal even by singer-songwriter standards.
Biilmann wrote the song after an extraordinarily difficult twelve-month period in his life. He and his wife experienced two miscarriages, his wife underwent a cancer procedure while pregnant, his father was diagnosed with motor neuron disease, a close friend faced cancer, and a friendship ended following betrayal.
Those experiences aren't simply background information to the song. You can hear them.
Biilmann doesn't perform Dark Days as someone trying to manufacture emotion. His vocal carries the fatigue, frustration and vulnerability of someone who has actually lived through what he is singing about.
That authenticity is the track's greatest strength.
Musically, Dark Days moves between space and intensity rather than remaining at one emotional level. The arrangement gives Biilmann's vocal room to breathe before building in power, creating dynamics that mirror the subject matter remarkably well.
And importantly, this isn't a song without hope.
Biilmann has since become the father of a baby boy, his wife is now in good health and his father's condition is stable. In that context, Dark Days becomes more than a reflection on hardship. It is also a song about making it through to the other side.
At 4 minutes and 10 seconds, the track refuses to rush its story. In an era increasingly dominated by songs designed to grab attention within seconds, that feels refreshing. Biilmann allows the song to develop naturally and trusts the listener to stay with him.
We did.
DMP VERDICT
Dark Days is raw, beautifully controlled and emotionally convincing. Jack Biilmann combines excellent songwriting with a powerful vocal performance and an arrangement that knows exactly when to hold back and when to hit harder.
This isn't sadness created for effect. It is lived experience transformed into music.
And that makes all the difference.
