Future Mondays - Runaway
Restless indie rock built for motion
New York City indie rock outfit Future Mondays return with Runaway, a track that combines restless rock energy, melodic hooks and just enough roughness around the edges to give the song its own personality.
Future Mondays describe their music as βindie rock, synthy therapop with unpolished teeth,β and Runaway fits comfortably within that world. The band blends indie and alternative rock with touches of synth-driven pop, but what immediately stands out here is the sheer momentum of the track.
From the moment Runaway gets moving, it is difficult to sit still.
The rhythm has an infectious forward drive, with guitars and drums pushing the song along without making the production feel overcrowded. There is energy everywhere, but the arrangement still leaves enough room for the vocal to remain at the centre.
And that vocal is one of the track's strongest assets.
There is a pleasant roughness in the voice, particularly when the melody begins to climb. Those higher, more forceful moments bring out a slightly raspy edge that suits the song extremely well. Instead of polishing that character away, Future Mondays allow it to become part of the identity of the recording. It gives Runaway the feeling of a band playing with genuine urgency rather than simply chasing studio perfection.
Lyrically, the song explores attraction, escape and a relationship carrying plenty of scars from the past. Images of desire, decay and damaged hearts create something darker underneath the energetic instrumentation.
At its heart sits a simple but very effective idea: two people becoming each other's escape.
βI could be your getaway / You could be my runaway.β
That contrast works beautifully. Musically, Runaway makes you want to move, while lyrically there is something much less carefree going on. These aren't two people running simply for the adventure; they appear to be carrying yesterday's wounds with them.
That gives the track more depth than its immediately catchy rhythm might suggest.
Future Mondays are a New York City band consisting of Sean on vocals and rhythm guitar, Alex on vocals and keys, Jacob on lead guitar and Gian on drums. Their sound moves between indie rock, alternative rock, new wave and synth-driven pop, with an intentionally unpolished edge that has become an important part of their musical identity.
Released on August 21, 2026, Runaway follows the band's earlier 2026 single Faithlessly and shows a group continuing to develop a sound that feels energetic, accessible and unmistakably rooted in rock.
It is also exactly the reason Runaway earned its place on the EGM Playlists β ROCK HOT LIST.
The hooks work, the rhythm moves, the guitars have bite and that raspy vocal edge provides the personality needed to prevent the song from becoming just another polished indie-rock production.
Runaway doesn't ask permission to get moving.
It simply starts running β and invites you to come along.
DMP SCORE: 8.5/10
Energetic, catchy and rough around the right edges, Future Mondays deliver an indie-rock track with enough rhythm to move your feet and enough emotional damage underneath to keep your head involved too.
